Senior-level Secretary of the Navy challenge coin issued during the tenure of Ray Mabus, the 75th Secretary of the Navy. The front features a blue Secretary of the Navy flag with anchor emblem and four stars, surrounded by. RAY MABUS SECRETARY OF THE NAVY. The reverse displays the official seals of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps, reflecting the Secretary of the Navy’s leadership of both services. A facsimile-style Ray Mabus signature appears beneath the service seals, with four additional stars along the lower portion of the design. Ray Mabus served as Secretary of the Navy from May 19, 2009 through January 2017, making him the longest-serving Secretary of the Navy since World War I. During his tenure he led the Department of the Navy, which encompasses both the Navy and Marine Corps. Period military imagery and Navy records document Mabus personally presenting his Secretary of the Navy challenge coins to Sailors and Marines in recognition of service and accomplishments, confirming these were genuine senior-leadership presentation pieces rather than ordinary commemorative merchandise. This example combines a named cabinet-level official, Navy and Marine Corps insignia, four-star Secretary flag imagery, and direct attribution to Ray Mabus. It has strong crossover appeal for collectors of Secretary of the Navy memorabilia, USN, USMC, Pentagon leadership, named military presentation coins, and senior government challenge coins.
